The clash between the Amish culture and the “englishers” is a common theme in Amish Fiction. When I first started reading Amish Promises by Leslie Gould there was little to make me think this book would be any different than many I have read before. But as I continued to read I was captivated by Ms. Goulds ability to take a common theme and turn it into a story that I could barely put down. The development of the characters and relationships in this first of the Neighbors of Lancaster County series proved to be beyond my expectations. There is complexity in the background of each character. This complexity combined with the intertwined and complicated current events create a look into Amish vs. Englisher that is new and different. From Eve, who is torn between Amish and English life for love, or Joel and Charlie with their past military experiences, each character has a strong role in the story. Even the children represent a strong position in the story. I am pleased to know that this is the first of a series and look forward to reading more from this story line.
