Dutch Oven Farmer Bread

Dutch Oven (1)What could be better on a cold winters day than fresh bread right out of the dutch oven?  This recipe is simple and can be torn apart into dense, crusty hunks of delicious homemade bread.  Our favorite way to eat it is warm and slathered in homemade butter (our 4 step recipe for butter is here!).  This bread recipe is forgiving, so even if you aren’t a bread baking pro, you and yours will enjoy a scrumptious result!!! Enjoy!

Dutch Oven Farmer Bread
a crusty and simple bread baked in a cast iron dutch oven (other baking pan options listed in the notes below)

Ingredients
  1. 2 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast (1 package)
  2. 1 TBS. sugar
  3. 2 tsp. salt
  4. 2 cups warm water
  5. 1 TBS. oil (vegetable or olive)
  6. 4 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  7. olive oil to brush on crust
Instructions
  1. -Mix yeast, sugar, salt and warm water until well blended
  2. -Add the oil and mix well
  3. -Add 2 cups of flour and whisk together until well mixed
  4. -Add remaining flour to form a soft ball
  5. -Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes
  6. -Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel or cloth and allow to
  7. rise for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size
  8. -Punch the dough down and form into a loose ball shape.
  9. -Turn out into greased cast iron dutch oven (or other baking pan)
  10. -Cover and allow to rise for 45 minutes
  11. -Brush the top of the loaf with olive oil and sprinkle with a little flour
  12. -Bake at 375 degrees for about 25 minutes, or until the loaf sounds hollow when
  13. the crust is tapped
  14. -Turn out onto a plate or cutting board and enjoy!
Notes
  1. this recipe calls for baking in a cast iron dutch oven. you can also bake it as a free-form loaf on a greased cookie sheet, or in a regular greased loaf pan.
