Are you hot and looking for something refreshing to cool you down? Something that will taste great, and maybe help bring back a little “zing”? We always enjoy trying something new and flavorful, and Homemade Ginger Ale is definitely flavorful! This unique drink will leave you feeling perky and able to make it through these hot, dog days of summer.
Growing up I never knew much about ginger- other than it was the thing that tasted weird in fruit cake (that was candied ginger)! But as I have learned to love cooking, I have also learned to love ginger. When used properly it gives food and drinks a wonderfully delightful flavor. And I’ve found that the more I use it, the stronger the ginger flavor I can tolerate.
There is no doubt about it, ginger is one of my favorite herbs. Not only do I enjoy the taste, it’s medicinal qualities are amazing. Ginger is well known for it’s ability to help relieve nausea and or an upset tummy. It also is a terrific anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, pain reliever. Ginger is well used as an expectorant and for relief of cold symptoms. I have also used ginger in soaps and salves! Wherever I can find a use for ginger, I love to add it in. Between the spicy, spunky scent and the flavor and medicinal properties, ginger can easily find a home in many of your creations.
There are so many ways to use fresh Ginger Root. While it’s not for everyone, one of my favorite ways is in this uniquely flavored Homemade Ginger Ale.
Try it out- and we hope you enjoy!
Homemade Ginger Ale
-3/4 cup fresh, peeled, Ginger Root, grated or finely diced
-1/2 cup lime juice (I use the bottled kind)
-1/4 cup organic Cane Sugar (white sugar just won’t work for this one)
-2 tsp. Sea Salt
-1/2 gallon water (we have great well water, but filtered water is recommended)
1. Add all the ingredients to a 1/2 gallon Mason Jar and stir well until the sugar is pretty well dissolved.
2. Cover with a jar lid (I use the white plastic ones for things that I am not sealing), and leave it on the counter at room temperature for 3 days. I shake my jar once or twice a day to keep it mixed.
3. At the end of 3 days you will have delicious Ginger Ale that can be strained, and then mixed with carbonated water to give it some “fizz”, consumed chilled, or sipped as a warm tea.
This will keep in your refrigerator for several months (but mine doesn’t last that long!)
Enjoy your Homemade Ginger Ale!
