Blooming Too Soon - One Ash Homestead

Do you want to jump into homesteading? Are you feeling bored and want a new adventure? Maybe you are impatient about marriage or having children. Are you looking around at other people and thinking “why are they doing that/having that and I’m not?”. You could be feeling like you want to learn a new hobby or skill that you know nothing about. Possibly you feel like you just need more. More money, more fun, more things, more experiences…..more, more, more.

How many times have you said “I don’t need to wait. I know what I’m doing!”. How many times have you moved ahead with something and “bloomed” before you really, in your heart, knew it was time? We’ve all done it, but how many times have you ended up with the beautiful fruit you expected?

When I was walking around the farm today I realized how many trees and plants are starting to bloom, way too soon, in the middle of winter. Yes, they probably think that it’s time to bloom. The weather has been mild and the temperatures warm. But these plants shouldn’t be blooming until spring is truly here, and the obstacles of winter weather have passed. They are just like people who bloom too soon. When we “think” we are ready to bloom before the time is right, before we have worked through obstacles, we will face consequences that may be unexpected, undesirable and even incomprehensible. These trees and plants that are blooming too soon most likely won’t bear fruit this year. We haven’t passed the obstacles of winter, we will still have other freezing weather that will deaden these blooms. They will lose a year of their productive life span and fail to produce fruit for our homestead. The difference between us and these plants is that as people, we have the glorious option to pray and ask for God’s guidance. We have the ability to reason and consider consequences that could result from blooming too soon. We have friends and family from whom we can seek advice so that we don’t risk blooming before it’s time. We have the growth in our lives to let experience and maturity help us think before we bloom.

As with these trees and plants, there can be results you don’t want if you bloom too soon. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t take those leaps of faith in life, but you do need to think it through first. Use your resources, pray, and learn to be patient. Waiting is one of the hardest things that is asked of us in life. But, like this apple tree, if you bloom before all the circumstances are lined up properly and all the obstacles have been considered and cleared, you may not reap the proper fruit, or any fruit at all. God wants us to bloom where we are planted, where He has us. He wants us to produce the proper fruits as written in Galatians 5:22. He wants us to know our purpose and fulfill it. He has given us the ability to think, reason and communicate. But, He doesn’t want us to push ahead of His timing.

Waiting is hard. Being patient is hard. Not doing what you want, when you want it, is hard. Doing what you “think” you are ready to do may take a few weeks, a month, maybe even a few years, or maybe never. Blooming too soon can ruin your fruit, can wilt your blossom, and can be downright ugly. But blooming at the right time. …..well, that is beautiful.
