Life on the homestead is not always the most feminine thing we can do. Face it, this lifestyle is very practical, frugal and utilitarian. It’s hard work, dirty clothes and hands, and often times very little attention to ourselves as women. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I look around and don’t see anything but items that are practical, items that are to be used for something. I love seeing and enjoying pretty things sometimes. Things that are more feminine and things that make me smile (other than my homestead!).
I think it’s important for us to keep balance in our lives. All work and no play makes a dull boy (girl?), right? We all need times to just get un-busy and enjoy the prettiness around us.
Even though we love our homestead life, there are times when a few more delicate touches would bring a smile to our face. Times when we, as women, need more than dirt, work, and manure!
It’s important, too, that we stay feminine for our husbands. I know Mr. One Ash loves it when I go outside and work like a ranch hand. But I know he also loves it when I smell good, when I look nice, and when our home is more than just a storage place for barn supplies. In other words, he likes it when he sees some feminine touches.
Naturally I want to make Mr. One Ash happy, and I know you want to keep your home and husband happy as well. I’ve tried to add some more feminine touches here on our homestead. I hope you will be inspired to do the same!
Here are some of the ways we make our homestead more feminine…..
Add some lace. While we are far from being frilly, lacy, “girlie girls”, we have added some vintage lace pieces around the house that help to soften all that practical utilitarianism.
Use pretty things. A beautiful tea cup, handmade tea towels, dish cloths like grandma made. It’s just as easy to use something pretty as it is to use something boring and dull!
Wear skirts. Now this isn’t easy at first, but I have discovered that I can do just about anything in a skirt. I can still throw on my boots and plaid flannel jacket, but when I finish the chore and brush myself off I look just a bit more “put together” than I might have if wearing britches.
Use flowers and floral designs to bring the beauty of nature inside. Whether it’s in pictures, subtle touches on dishes, clothes or pillows, or full out bouquets, adding a few flowers will brighten the day.
Study and strive to be a Proverbs 31 woman. What greater way to add femininity to your homestead than by being the woman God has asked us to be. While we must meet the demands of our physical homestead, our hearts are to be where He intended.
Proverbs 31:30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
