Hey there, fellow homesteaders! Spring has finally arrived here at One Ash Homestead, and we’re excited to dive into the new season. As the days get longer and warmer, it’s the perfect time to tackle some of those projects we’ve been putting off all winter.
Here are 12 things to do on the homestead this spring:
1. Clean Out the Coop: Give the coop a good scrubbing, removing any soiled bedding, disinfecting the feeders and waterers, and adding a fresh layer of bedding material. Don’t forget to brush away those pesky cobwebs that have accumulated in the corners!
2. Start Seeds Indoors: Get a head start on the growing season by starting seeds indoors. We like to start our tomatoes, peppers, and herbs 4-6 weeks before the last frost date. Make sure to provide adequate light, warmth, and moisture for optimal germination.
3. Prune the Orchard: Spring is the perfect time to prune our fruit trees. By removing any dead or diseased branches, we can promote healthy growth and encourage a bountiful harvest. Prune during the dormant season to minimize stress on the trees.
4. Repair Fences, Gates, and Locks: Inspect and repair any damage to our fences, gates, and locks. We like to use this opportunity to also add any new fencing or enclosures we need. Make sure to check for any signs of wear or damage, and repair or replace as needed.
5. Plant Potatoes: As soon as the soil can be worked in the spring, we like to plant our potatoes. We’ve had great success with a variety of heirloom potatoes, and they’re always a staple in our garden. Before planting, be sure to “chit” your potatoes.
6. Start Composting: If you haven’t already, start composting this spring. We like to add a mix of “green” materials like food scraps and grass clippings, and “brown” materials like leaves and straw.
7. Check the Sprinklers, Hoses, and Watering System: Spring is a great time to inspect our sprinklers, hoses, and watering system. Check for any leaks, kinks, or damage, and repair or replace as needed.

8. Plant a Spring Garden: In addition to our main summer garden, we like to plant a smaller spring garden with cool-season crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas.
9. Clean Out the Barn: Spring is a great time to give the barn a good cleaning. We like to remove any soiled bedding, disinfect the stalls and equipment, and add a fresh layer of bedding material. Be sure to sweep away those annoying spider webs that have formed on the rafters!
10. Inspect the Chicken Run: Make sure the chicken run is secure and predator-proof. We like to inspect the fencing, check for any signs of wear or damage, and make any necessary repairs.
11. Plan the Summer Garden: Spring is a great time to plan out our summer garden. We like to decide which crops we want to plant, make a layout of the garden beds, and start making a schedule for planting and harvesting.
12. Take a Walk Around the Property: Finally, take some time to walk around the property and inspect for any damage or areas that need attention. We like to use this opportunity to also plan out any new projects or additions we want to make to the homestead.
And don’t forget the most important thing: enjoy the beauty of spring! Take time to appreciate the blooming flowers, the songs of the birds, and the warmth of the sun on your face.
I hope these tasks help you get started on your own homesteading journey this spring! What’s on your to-do list this season?
