The latest and third book in the Amish of Weaver’s Creek series, Softly Blows the Bugle, from Jan Drexler continues with the post-civil war era story of Elizabeth Kaufman. After the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863 Elizabeth is faced with a new chapter of her life no longer being at the mercy of her husband. Seeing this as a blessing in her life she vows to move ahead without a man or children in her life….until Aaron Zook returns from the war two years later.
We are introduced to Aaron and begin to learn about his intense draw back into the Amish ways of his grandfather. His yearning for a simple life is strong, but he soon realizes he has complications in this life just as he had during war times, and Elizabeth is at the heart of them. The details of the relationship complications between Elizabeth, non-Amish and unsettled Aaron, respectable Amish man Solomon Mast, and non-Amish Jonas are interesting and complex. The character development is solid and easy to understand.
I have not read any other books by Jan Drexler and found this one to be quite good. She has looked at the Amish lifestyle from a view that is not typical of many other authors. I also enjoyed the combination of historical times along with the Amish fiction.
If you are tired of some of the usual Amish authors and story lines I think this would be a good book for you to try out.
