Here’s another terrific book I’ve discovered through my partnership with Storey Publishing. The Backyard Homestead series has several books available (you can check them out HERE!) , and the latest is this Guide to Growing Organic Food. As a lover of gardening I have tried for many years to learn about how to do it organically. After all, why should we even be growing our own food if we are just going to douse it with the same chemicals the commercial farms are using? I’ve managed to learn a few tricks over the years, but WOW! I was amazed when I started looking through The Backyard Homestead Guide to Growing Organic Food.
The amount of information in this book is simply mind boggling- in a good way! The research into the 62 varieties of vegetables, fruits, nuts and herbs is concise and easy to understand. From Apples to Thyme you can learn about when to start seeds, how long it takes until harvest, what the soil temperature and water needs are. You’ll also learn about pests, diseases and appropriate ally and companion plants. And then you will see how to store what you’ve harvested! See what I mean? The information is fantastic!
And as if that wasn’t enough, there are sections on common problems, diseases, insects, and of course how to treat, control and eliminate them. One of the most interesting sections for me was the chart on Plant Allies and What They Do. Who knew that planting Borage next to Squash helps control the irritating squash vine borer?!
I just love all the books that Storey publishes, but this is a real good one! I think anyone who is gardening should have this in their library. If you want to purchase a copy, or read more about this terrific resource, you can find it at our One Ash Homestead Resources Store HERE!
