It would have been difficult to have escaped either singing or hearing the old hymn Amazing Grace at some point in your life. The song has always been one of my favorites and never fails to reach my heart. Yet after years of appreciating the song I had never really known the story behind it. For the first time I have had the chance to read the incredible story behind Amazing Grace composed by John Newton in the very interesting book Amazing Grace by author Bruce Hindmarsh and Craig Borlase.
This true story is like reading a novel of a flawed and sinful man. From the publishers site (Harper Collins)-
Amazing Grace is based on years of research on the life and writings of John Newton. It tells of a prodigal who returns home, and a young love that defies the odds; of a young man whose life is torn by grief and wounded by the cruelty of others, following his descent into deeper suffering and finally into the brutal world of the slave trade. Newton rejects God repeatedly but is rescued by a divine mercy that reaches deeper than he could ever have imagined as he ultimately faces his past and repents.
What an amazing testimony and transformation of a man! And what a reassurance that God can do the same for us. I know that after reading this story I will find singing the old hymn Amazing Grace to be a deeper and more reverent experience.
