“Oh my stars”, Carnation Instant Breakfast, The Walton’s, Kmart, Dallas, The Dukes of Hazzard, “spilling the beans”, little red schoolhouse, air pump scooters, saluting the American flag, 21 gun salutes, Taps on the trumpet, station wagons, the Pledge of Allegiance, church and faith in God. If you grew up in a time where these things were common, then you are sure to love the book Hoofprints of the Heart by author Dena Mason.
I could go on and on writing about the fond memories, wonderful recollections and heartwarming true stories that Dena Mason has shared in this coming-of-age book. Based in and around the small town of Eckley, Colorado, the story had special meaning for me. Having grown up in Northeastern Colorado I was familiar with the eastern plains, the lifestyle, and the hardships of the area. That certainly added to my enjoyment of Hoofprints Of The Heart, but is not a requirement for reading this treasure.
In the book Dena shares how she learned through experiencing both loss and living. She rode horses on the plains, spent time in the love of nature and family, and learned that surrendering to the unexpected things in life will lead to the most happiness. There is much to learn from each and every one of the stories told in this compelling book.
If you long for a more simple life, despite times that were filled with both joy and suffering, then I would highly recommend reading Hoofprints Of The Heart. The book is easy to read and you won’t want to put it down! You will be enriched by the strength and support of family, and the love of God that has “bestowed an enduring legacy”.
