The peaches have been so good in South Carolina this year and I just can’t resist adding another peach post to the blog! Every year we are blessed to be able to enjoy boxes upon boxes of fresh peaches from the local peach farms.
There is nothing quite as juicy or yummy as a fresh South Carolina peach. Oh, yes, our neighbors in Georgia like to call themselves the “peach state”, but did you know that South Carolina produces the most peaches of any state in the nation? And One Ash is located right in the heart of South Carolina peach country. That’s why we just can’t resist posting a lot about peaches!
Fresh peaches have always been considered a summer treat. Who remembers when we used to only be able to get fruit that was in season? That’s sort of what it’s like around here when peach season hits. Everything is about peaches, and everyone is buying and enjoying fresh picked peaches.
We have a few peach trees here at One Ash, but we just aren’t able to grow them as well as some of the local larger peach farms. So when we see the peaches being harvested, we head to the peach farm!
Around here there are 2 kinds of peaches. First there are the “early” peaches that are harvested first. These are also known as Cling Peaches, meaning the fruit clings tightly to the peach pit. These are not our favorites- they are smaller and more difficult to remove the pit to work with the fruit. The other type of peaches grown around here are the “late” peaches- harvested second in the season. These are also known as Freestone Peaches. And we think freestone peaches are just the best! They are easy to remove the pit, so making preserves, canning peaches, or using the fruit for anything is simple to do with these type peaches.
Typical summer peach preserving for us is to make jam, make peach pit and peel jelly, can some peach slices and freeze some peach slices. But when we have lots of peaches, or maybe some odd amounts leftover after canning, it’s fun to try different recipes to see what other things we can make with peaches.
Here is a new one that we tried- quick and easy peach dumplings. And OH MY! These were so good! I can tell you this will become a new staple in our peach recipe library!
Try this one out, and we hope you enjoy!

Really? Mountain Dew?? I've never heard of such a thing. But count me in. I just ran to the kitchen and put Mountain Dew and crescent rolls on my shopping list. I love peaches (canned 79 quarts this season). We don't drink soda pop so this is really going to be interesting to see howit comes out.
As always – Thanks for sharing. You are so creative and gracious with all that you do. It's very much appreciated.
