If you’ve read this blog for a while, then it’s no secret that we love sweets! But we have recently been doing some studying about all that sugar intake (and all the health problems that are caused by it)…..and decided it’s time to cut back. There are a whole bunch of sources that will tell you how much sugar we eat, but on average I found that the American diet currently consists of over 150 lbs. of sugar each year. That’s an entire persons weight worth of sugar!!!! In comparison, we consumed somewhere around 40 lbs. per year in 1900. So, according to Forbes.com, we are consuming about 3 lbs. of sugar a week, which equates to around 3,550 lbs. in our lifetime, which is the equivalent of 1,767,900 Skittles. WOW!
So as we are venturing into a sugar free diet, I am starting to experiment with recipes. We still have that need for our baked goods and treats, so I am working with my old tried and true recipes to eliminate the white sugar content. I have started with this delish Sugar Free Peach Crumble (a re-do of our popular Amish Peach Goodie recipe). What we are finding is that without all that refined sugar we are able to taste- I mean really taste- the true flavors of fruits and other naturally sweet things. I hope you will join us on our latest journey, and ENJOY!
